Expatistan estimates a single person at about $2,600 a month. Most readers will land between the two.

Areas

Rodney Bay and Gros Islet

Beaches, resorts, nightlife, restaurants, and Pigeon Island National Park (Expat Exchange).

A common first base. Health facilities are available in Gros Islet (US State Department).

Castries

The capital, home of the Immigration Department and the smaller George F. L. Charles airport.

Health facilities are available here. Demonstrations are infrequent and centered near Parliament (US State Department).

Marigot Bay

An upscale bay south of Castries.

Costlier for budget renters (Expat Exchange).

Soufriere and the Pitons

The southwest, reached by a coastal road.

Signage is sparse and covered by foliage, and night driving is unsafe outside towns (US State Department).

Vieux Fort

The south, home of Hewanorra International Airport.

Health facilities are available here. About 70 to 90 minutes from Rodney Bay by road.

Numbeo's island range for a one bedroom is $185 to $926 a month in the center and $185 to $556 outside it. Expatistan lists a furnished 85 square meter apartment at EC$2,000 in a normal area, about $741, and EC$7,000 in an expensive area, about $2,593. We found no verified rent data by neighborhood.

Scores (city specific)

Geo-metric score
4.8 / 10

Central rent runs about 9 times below New York (Numbeo: $502 against $4,433), but groceries sit near US prices and a single person's total is near $2,600 on Expatistan.

Efficiency score
5.6 / 10

Fast fiber, English, and easy visa free entry for US, UK, and Canadian citizens, held back by the 6 week clock and a crime advisory.

Scores are calibrated against Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, and Tokyo, the same scale as Jakarta and Lahore.

Friction factors

Friction factorScoreWhy
Internet reliability8 / 10Fixed broadband averaged 120.2 Mbps from October 2025 to September 2026, and Digicel's fiber reach is growing from 56 to over 99 percent of homes.
Visa runway4 / 10Visitor entry plus EC$200 extensions, with no income based long stay.
Power reliability6 / 10An island-wide shutdown on May 1, 2026, restored within the day.

Workspace

We found no published day pass prices for Rodney Bay coworking spaces, so the realistic setup is a rental or hotel with fiber. Digicel and Flow are the two main mobile operators, and both ask for a passport to register a SIM (eSIM.net, 2026).

A day in the life

TimeWhat it looks like
8:00Breakfast out. An inexpensive meal is EC$22, about $8.15 (Numbeo).
9:00Work from your rental on a fiber plan. Broadband averaged 120 Mbps over the last 12 months (SpeedGeo), and a 60 Mbps plan is about $46 a month (Numbeo).
13:00Lunch and a cappuccino at EC$10.50, about $3.89 (Numbeo).
16:00Reduit Beach or a walk through Pigeon Island National Park when the work day ends.
19:30Dinner for two, mid-range, about $74 (Numbeo). A taxi starts at EC$25, about $9.26.

Getting around

George F. L. Charles airport

Closest to Rodney Bay, about 15 minutes by road. A private taxi runs about $25 to $30 for up to three people (Tripjive).

Hewanorra airport

About 63 km from Rodney Bay, roughly 70 to 90 minutes. Taxis run about $85 to $95 for up to three people (Tripjive).

Driving

Avoid night driving in rural areas, where roads are poorly maintained (US State Department). Gasoline is about $1.54 a liter.

Honest friction, month three

The entry clock. There is no remote worker visa. British citizens get up to 6 weeks on arrival, and each extra 30 days costs EC$200, about $74. Three months in means paying for two extensions and knowing the Immigration Department can decline.
Groceries are not cheap. Numbeo lists milk 101 percent higher than the US, tomatoes 72 percent higher, and apples 46 percent higher. Expatistan puts a single person's monthly total near EC$7,030, about $2,604.
Crime. The US State Department rates Saint Lucia Level 2, issued July 10, 2026, and says violent crime can occur anywhere, including at resorts. It advises against walking or driving at night.
Power. A fault on May 1, 2026 shut down the whole electricity system until LUCELEC restored supply gradually (Jamaica Observer, May 4, 2026). Utilities also run EC$355, about $132.
Hurricane season. The US State Department notes hurricane risk in the summer months and flash flooding from tropical rains. It recommends medical evacuation insurance.
Healthcare outside the main towns. Facilities are in Castries, Gros Islet, and Vieux Fort, and rural care is harder to find, with poorly maintained roads (US State Department).

Honest opinion

Saint Lucia is a beautiful, English speaking island with fast internet, and a strong place to land for a few weeks. It is a weaker plan for a full year, because the rules give you weeks at a time and the cheap rent does not extend to groceries. If you earn in USD and want a Caribbean base without moving countries, treat Saint Lucia as a six week test and decide what comes next from there.

Trivia answer

B. British citizens can stay up to 6 weeks on arrival without a visa (UK Foreign Office), and extensions cost EC$200 for every 30 days (Embassy of Saint Lucia).
